Nohkalikai Falls, Meghalaya

Hiding amongst thick clouds and heavy fog this remarkable waterfall with breath-taking visuals leaves one to think how unexpected anything can be, just as unexpected the story behind the name of this waterfall is.

Noh(translating to jump) Ka(referred to as female in khasi) translates to the Jump of Ka Likai, as the legend goes where a single mother overcome from an unspeakable grief of losing her only child jumped from the edge of the cliff of the waterfall.

Standing there watching the waterfall awestruck and amazed by its beauty, one can’t possibly imagine the emotions hiding behind the events that led to this fall’s name. Emotions of grief, shock, lose and misery felt by Ka Likai while she was standing at the edge of the cliff completely submerged in her pain and ignorant of the grand and unfathomable atmosphere around her.

Likai’s story or better yet the legend of Nohkalikai Falls surly makes me wonder of how it’s said that ‘nature heals all wounds’ but really it’s just the idea or the perspective of how one likes to view everything around them.
